Is stem cell therapy for Macular Degeneration & Vision worth it?
Current evidence does not support buying retinal cell therapy as routine care or assuming an acceptable individual risk-benefit balance. The most defensible access is through a well-designed registered clinical trial with independent oversight, transparent costs and no promise of vision stabilisation or restoration. Participation must not delay anti-VEGF therapy or other established ophthalmic care when indicated.
How stem cells are studied for Macular Degeneration & Vision
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and inherited retinal diseases can damage photoreceptors or the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), but they are distinct conditions with different causes and established management. Investigational cell approaches include RPE or retinal progenitor products derived from sources such as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC). Laboratory differentiation or integration hypotheses do not establish restored vision in people. Product identity, surgical route, immune risk and disease stage are critical. The registry table on this page lists relevant studies and their current recruitment status.
